1869 Caboose Potbelly Coal Stove

The 1869 Caboose Potbelly Stove is reminiscent of the potbelly stoves seen in the train stations and cabooses of yesteryear. This high performance potbelly stove is constructed of all cast iron and is designed to burn coal. Its generous firepot capacity with shaker grate allows 40 lbs. of coal to burn for eight hours before requiring refueling. Separate ash door with slide draft control at bottom creates a “forge effect” that ensures proper combustion. Long flared top with 8″ lift out lid facilitates fry pan or tea kettle. Stove comes assembled except for legs.

Great Stove

I bought this stove when it was originally Vogelzang. Same stove. Burns wood and coal. I’ve burned lump and nut coal. Max log size is about 15 inches long and 6×6 wide and high. I use it in an old farmhouse that was built about 1870 and 2000 sq feet. Winters are cold with temps below zero at night and sometimes not above 20 for weeks at a time. We build a wood fire then dump nut coal in when it burns down a bit. Keeps the house between 75 and 85 until it dips below -20 and then I notice cold corners and patches. I don’t use any kind of electric circulation, Just use it as it came out of the box. You can cook on top of it with a fry pan or Dutch oven and it keeps the coffee rolling out all day long. It’s a sweet set up and I’d recommend it to anyone interested in staying warm in ultra cold temps. My kids all grew up with it and love sitting next to it when they come home for holidays. Fall and spring I get by with a morning and evening fire. It is our sole source of heat because I’m too cheap to turn the other on but it keeps the place in t-**** weather. Wife loves to cook on it and it’s easy because it’s already up and going. This stove won’t disappoint.
